About Michael Thompson

Please note that this photo is taken some time ago when our son was younger. He is older now but we love this family photo that was taken when he was a baby.

Professional

After attending University of Manitoba for a number of years focusing on Computer Science, I pursued a full time career at Western Canada Lottery Corporation for 25 years. I was involved in major corporate projects and was in charge of computer operations around the clock 365 days of the year.

I further developed the managerial skills gained within the workplace and my volunteer endeavours, by obtaining my Project Management Certificate at Red River College. I also gained risk management experience during my employment at Deloitte and I recently completed my Management Certificate at the University of Winnipeg while working and helping to raise a family.

I am currently employed by Kiwi Installations and Christie Lites.

Community Involvement

Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel: I have been involved with this amazing fundraising initiative for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for the past 17 years. I have served in a variety of roles, most currently filling the role of director to make this event a success. We are the largest outdoor curling event of its kind in Canada.

Toastmasters International: I was involved with this organization for almost 15 years during which I had the opportunity to meet amazing people and community organizations through Manitoba and Northern Ontario. During this time period, I had the privilege of holding club executive positions and advancing to Area Governor, Division Governor (selected as Division Governor of the Year), and Lieutenant Governor of Marketing.

Winnipeg International Children’s Festival: I have volunteered for many years with various work crews and was the first coordinator to organize and run the gate crew.

Klinic: Served as a volunteer telephone crisis counsellor for 10 months on the 24-hour Crisis Line and Manitoba Suicide Prevention and Support Line.

Winnipeg Folk Festival: Festival Site Security

Agassiz Music Festival, Cello Festival of Canada: Director

Manitoba Marathon: Medical team

Habitat for Humanity (Halifax)

Junior Chamber International (JCI) Winnipeg: Executive

Personal

I was adopted by a wonderful Ukrainian-Canadian couple and grew up in Amaranth Manitoba. I initially moved to Winnipeg to begin my high school education at St. Boniface Diocesan High School. I was fortunate to meet my partner, Jill, and to welcome a wonderful baby boy together in 2012. Being a father has been a dream come true.

We live in an amazing community and I am willing and prepared to work hard for the residents of Fort Rouge and East Fort Garry. I truly do understand the financial, emotional and time constraints placed upon individuals and families during this day and age and I would like to make a difference for all families as a representative at city hall. With your support and vote on October 24, 2018, you will be giving me the opportunity to make a difference for you.
